A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

"Newcastle u Lyme is a well known market town of Staffordshire, and where from 1281 fairs and wakes were held; it was inevitably also a place of entertainment. Though little is known of the sports and pastimes enjoyed by the populace in medieval times, there is evidence of bear baiting. In 1372 John of gaunt in a letter to his steward, Godfrey Foljambe, confirmed the right of William de Brompton and Margaret, his wife, to levy 4d on each minstrel coming to the town at the feast of St Giles, and the same sum in the respect of each bear appearing."
